About Gwatkin Artworks

Wildlife art and pet portraits, drawn with patience, detail and a deep appreciation for the natural world.
I’m Darren, the artist behind Gwatkin Artworks. I create detailed wildlife artwork and meaningful pet portraits in coloured pencil and graphite, with each piece carefully drawn by hand from reference photographs.
The Artist Behind the Artwork
My name is Darren, and I’m a UK-based coloured pencil and graphite artist specialising in realistic wildlife artwork and pet portraits.
Through Gwatkin Artworks, I create hand-drawn pieces that focus on detail, character and atmosphere. Whether I’m drawing a wild animal, a much-loved pet, or an original piece inspired by the natural world, my aim is always to create artwork that feels personal, considered and full of life.
Each drawing takes time, patience and close observation. I work carefully from reference photographs, building up fine layers of pencil to capture texture, expression, light and the small details that make each subject unique.

Inspired by Wildlife, Nature and Character
Wildlife has become an increasingly important part of Gwatkin Artworks. I’m drawn to subjects that carry atmosphere, movement and quiet presence — from the alert expression of a fox to the bright flash of a kingfisher or the gentle character of an otter.
My wildlife artwork allows me to explore the natural world through pencil, creating pieces that feel detailed, calm and expressive. These works are available as original drawings, fine art prints and selected wildlife commissions.
At the same time, pet portraits remain a meaningful part of my work. Pets hold a very personal place in people’s lives, and I approach each portrait with the same care, patience and attention to character.

Created with Professional Materials
Every original artwork is created using professional-quality coloured pencils and graphite, chosen for their detail, richness and permanence.
I use trusted artist materials including Faber-Castell Polychromos, Caran d’Ache Luminance and selected Derwent Lightfast pencils, working on high-quality surfaces such as museum board or drafting film depending on the artwork.
For fine art prints, my work is professionally reproduced from high-resolution scans and printed as Giclée prints on premium Hahnemühle Photo Rag paper. This helps preserve the detail, softness and depth of the original drawing.
The aim is simple: to create artwork that not only looks beautiful now, but can be enjoyed for years to come.

Commissioned Artwork with a Personal Approach
Commissioning artwork should feel clear, personal and enjoyable. Whether you’re enquiring about a pet portrait or a wildlife commission, I’ll guide you through the process from the first message to the finished drawing.
For pet portraits, I can help you choose suitable reference photographs and discuss the best size, layout and composition. For wildlife commissions, we can talk through your chosen subject, artwork direction and any reference material needed.
Once the details are agreed, a 25% booking fee secures your place in my commission schedule, and I’ll keep the process clear and straightforward from there.
